Freedomsmith Safety Lever Failure

Post by GlennSFX » Sun Jan 13, 2019 11:45 am

Went to the outdoor range this morning, despite being a little on the cold side, but wanted to get some outdoor practice in before next Saturday's match. Brought my new plate rack, 2/3 silhouette, and a couple cardboard IDPA targets. Started out with some warmup drill, some timed drills on the 2/3s and then to the plate rack. Got through 5 rounds and then on #6, got two shots and then NOTHING! The trigger was LOCKED...wouldn't move!!! Looked and saw that the SAFETY was gone.

Thank God it happened today and not during the match next week...let alone the Level II match in NC in March!!! I would have been VERY UPSET!!! :-x :-x That match cost $140 to enter, let alone the travel cost!!!!!

Anyways going to reach out to Freedomsmith and hopefully this can get resolved QUICKLY.

Sure they will replace but the question is “why?”

EXACTLY!!!!
Now I'll be second guessing the gun every time I shoot it.
I haven't heard of any other failures...hopefully this is just a fluke!

Looks like I'll be shooting the Combat at this Saturday's match!!

It's not a fluke.

This is covered on one or two other threads here. The first gen safety levers were obviously not robust enough. FS will replace them with a newer, heavier duty designed safety lever (not the entire trigger), but obviously the gun will be down until it gets here and until you get time to fix it.

It does require the entire disassembly and reassembly process that we have all come to know and love. It is actually a bit more difficult as the original trigger came with the roll pin partially started, but now you have to do the entire procedure. They do include a new roll pin.

This is an unfortunate case of a new technology (3D printing) and a new company (FS) and a classic manufacturing/QA learning curve.

So far, so good after around 300 rds with the new safety lever. We shall see.

Keep us posted how the process goes. I've heard from a few others with this issue, and FS did replace the part. Just sucks it has to happen, but like you said, QC learning curve for them. I have a gen1 in my SFx, and am now growing more concerned that I'll end up having to replace mine too.

YUP...I was already contacted by Freedomsmith. They quickly responded to my "Contact Us" message. They stated that I must have an older trigger and the new ones have a "heavy duty" safety. They said they'll get it out tomorrow. Looks like I'll give it a good cleaning today anticipating the new safety will be here in a few days.

Funny I haven't seen anything regarding the faulty safety levers. Are the old one plastic???

Thanks guys for the quick responses!

Yup, not sure if molded or 3D printed though. But from what I've heard the new one is metal and will hold up a lot better.

I think that it is 3D printed metal vs 3D printed plastic.

That might add to it but gee, what if you were needing the firearm for protection? Throw it?

Being a "Full Size" gun...it makes a great "BOOMERANG"! Hit's the bad guy, and returns to you for a second shot!!! :))

Someone mentioned in the FB group that the gen1 safety is actually metal, but the new ones are a beefed up version. I was under the impression it was plastic, and have never looked at it that closely.

I kinda wished it was plastic...I'd feel a lot better about the new one.
Hopefully they've torture tested this new one thoroughly!
