New SFX range report in KS

Post by Flingit1200s » Sat Jan 05, 2019 4:30 pm

What a great day! Sun was shining, wind was almost non existent, temperature in the 50's which is not normal for Kansas in January. Drove to an outdoor range 45min away that has steel to shoot. I took 200 rounds of Winchester 124gr NATO, 100 rds of PMC 115gr, 100rds of Herters 115 gr, 50 rds of Brown Bear 115gr steel case and 50rds of 115gr Winchester steel case. The NATO went downrange first with no failures. PMC, Herters and Brown Bear had no failures. The second round of the Winchester steel failed to feed and the other 48rds fed without issue. I'm a happy camper! Before I went out, I cleaned the gun and otherwise ran the stock gun with six different magazines. The gun was perfect but the operator needs some practice. The brown bear stuff seemed lighter on the recoil. When I was loading the Winchester steel case in the mags, the rounds seemed to have some kind of coating that wasn't slick. I was sure that they weren't going to feed at all but was glad I was wrong. The next steps are to dip my toe in the IDPA or USPSA pond and add an Elite!

Welcome to the forum if I hadn't said that before. Glad to see you had such a good time today; every day should be a range day.

I'm in SE Louisiana and you weather sounds exactly what our day was like. I pulled out the Harley and put about 100 miles on her.

I'd love to make a trip down there to try and catch some red fish!

The Elite is an excellent gun. Also check out the new Elite Combat, the flat faced trigger is outstanding on it.

Welcome!
Sounds like you're going down the same path I took.
SFX->FS Elite->Elite Combat...couldn't stop myself! :lol:

I bought the SFX with the intentions of it being a Comp gun. It's been heavily modified and fun to shoot!!!
You'll enjoy IDPA and USPSA. Always meeting super nice people willing to give advice.
I'm flying down to SC in March, my son and I are shooting the USPSA Low Country Battle at the Beach - 2019 South Carolina Section Championship. First level II match for both of us. He's young (25) and a good shooter, so I'm expecting him to kick my butt! =))

Have fun at the shoot! My son pulls triggers for a living in the Army Reserves right now in Kuwait. I’m sure he could kick my butt!

I love shooting steel with my SFX paired with a Vortex Venom at a Gun club I belong to just outside Kansas City (Pioneer Gun Club). I also picked up an Elite. Its no slouch in hitting the target also.

Where do you shoot in KS?

South of Wichita is a little town called Wellington that has an outdoor range with steel in most of the bays. Thanks for the tip on Pioneer!

I your going to be around KC sometime let me know and we can do some shooting at Pioneer. They have trap, 2 rifle ranges and around 5 pistol bays for different shooting disciplines. The falling plate range is great with 2 - 12 plate racks.

Interesting you had good luck with the Winchester steel, my Walther would not feed it at all.

“Good luck” might be relative. Lol. When I took it out of the box and saw how tacky it felt, I was disappointed. One failure to feed out of 50rds isn’t good for any ammunition in my book although I realize it could’ve been worse.
