Sfx groupings

Post by veprk » Wed May 01, 2019 11:26 am

Hello. Just wondering what y'all are getting with yours grouping wise. Unfortunately my sights are extremely far off as well as needing the lighter recoil spring. CAI brought up groupings without me mentioning anything in regards to it so now im wondering if theres further issues with mine and heading to range for some bench shooting in a few minutes. Have to say like ive seen with others im dissapointed so far. Thanks for any input

Sights being off is one thing, but pure grouping should be good regardless. If you bench shoot it and keep same POA regardless of POI the groups should still be very good. If not , check the barrel for burrs or damage to the crown area.

That’s your call. If your happy with it that’s what matters. I have a Grendel I built that I could not get to group better then 3/4” groups at 100 and I sold it. I rebuilt another near same everything and it is 1/2” shooter. We all have our standards so as long as you like it, it groups to your needs and expectations just roll on and be happy.

I agree.

The older I get the less steady my hands are so my acceptable grouping has changed... I was able to bench rest my Ruger Mark 4 with red dot last week and was getting 1 inch groupings... Of course that widens out freehand... But that's fine.. I know what that gun is capable of now, so it just makes me strive to keep practicing.... I've not had a chance to bench test my SFX, but free hand I'm happy with the results which is all that matters....

Last 10 yd group I did before shooting the match in NC. Main purpose was to chrono and double check PF measurements. Shots were off a range bag as a rest...

Several factors go into pistol accuracy and the ammo plays a huge part. If your ammo is inconsistent, it will not matter what you or the gun can do.

As for the SFx, mine will consistently group under 2” at 25 yards if I use good ammo and shoot from a bench. That is the standard I use when testing my reloads for USPSA. Shooting from a bench is the best way to find out what the pistol can do with any particular type of ammo. The only thing that might be better is using Ransom Rest as that takes all of the human factors out of it once the pistol is correctly mounted in the rest. The problem with that is the Ransom Rest and adapter plates are expensive. The last time I looked one up, the rest itself was still around $440.

Offhand accuracy is a mix of mechanical (intrinsic) accuracy, usable (practical) accuracy, consistent ammo and the skill of the person pulling the trigger. For most types of action shooting, you need to be able to keep your groups inside of 4” at 25yards. That’s smaller than what you will often see referred to as “acceptable combat accuracy” for most carry pistols - you will see some sources claim 5”-7” groups at 25 yards is acceptable combat accuracy - it bears a close remeblance to center mass of a man’s chest.

Custom built competition pistols are often much tighter and can manage very small groups. Some are even capable of 1-1.5” groups at 50 yards but they are also often in the >$3000 price bracket.

VERY NICE!!!!

Agreed...ammo definitely makes a difference. The expectations you mentioned for competitive shooting are made easier to achieve with low PF ammo. It makes a huge difference in how flat the gun runs!
