First time with TP9SA

Post by Larscout0311 » Sat Apr 20, 2019 9:38 pm

I bought my new TP9SA on monday and have been itching to get rounds through it. I went to the local outdoor range and put 100 rounds of 124gr NATO Winchester through it. Damn thing is more accurate than I am. I swapped the back straps to get a feel for them and my hands are pretty good size but I liked the smaller strap best. Only real issue I had was the Mec-gar mags at times didnt engage the slide catch. Im pretty confident my thumbs werent close enough to engage the catch so that's a little puzzling to me. Otherwise it's a great shooter with a great trigger. I'm quite happy with it. The only think I think I'd like to change would be the slide catch, it's a little tricky for me to manually lock the slide back when the catch feels flush with the frame.

Welcome to the addiction. These pistols just shoot. It is such a great combination of crisp /manageable recoil along with natural POA in my hands that make them fall back on target easy.

I had a couple new Caniks in the past where initially the slide wouldn't lock back. I put a little mark on the foot of the mags that displayed the issue and I monitored them. The issue seemed to resolve itself and I didn't have anymore issues with the mags. I figure I either limp wristed the last round, or the ammo I was shooting at the time wasn't strong enough to lock the slide back till the RSA was loosened up. Anyway, it's only happened to me when initially breaking in the new Canik, and it never happened again.

I have first gen SA and never had any issues with the slide not locking. Have had mine 3 or 4 years now and its one of my favorite guns to shoot at the range and I've yet to change anything on it. I do agree about the slide catch though could use a little extra meat on it, its tighter then a stock glock one and I always put extended release on those but the SA one will loosen up over time.

I agree. The slide stop is a pain to engage when locking back the slide w/o a mag in place. Other than that, it's one helluva pistol!

Welcome and congrats on the new SA!

Easiest way to see if the problem is with the mags or your thumb is to shoot the gun with your strong hand only. Load three rounds in each mag and see what happens. I had to change my strong hand thumb placement because I had the same issue. Still do once in a while!

The SA was my first Canik...that's what started the affliction, and 5 models later, the itch still remains...and worse yet, has spread to Sarsilmaz, the other Turkish best-kept-secret.
