Favorite 22LR and why.

Post by Flingit1200s » Sun Feb 03, 2019 10:19 am

Morning all. I have a Ruger Mark IV on the way to use for general cheap practice, fun plinking and to someday introduce shooting to my grandsons. Back when I was a kid, dad picked up whatever the hardware store had on the shelf and we shot it. Today there are tons of options not limited to lead, copper coated, different weights and velocities etc. I'd appreciate some feedback on what you shoot and why before I order 5000rds. Thanks gents.

I would recommend buying a variety to run through your specific gun to see what it runs best before buying 5000 rounds that your gun may not like. .22lr guns vary in ammo feed/fire reliability and can vary depending on how long since last cleaning.

People universally recommend CCI Standard Velocity lead nose but my S&W Victory runs the CCI High Velocity FMJ with more reliability once it starts getting dirty (say 400 rounds).
Lead nose rounds, regardless of manufacturer, start FTF in my gun as it gets dirty. My gun just prefers FMJ to lead nose.

I have found the Aguila Super Extra FMJ to be my preferred .22lr ammo. After 5000 rounds I haven't had a single FTF, FTE or dud. And they cost $0.033/round compared to CCI at $0.054/round.

I like the CCI HV's as well, but CCI in general usually runs in most .22s, my S&W M&PC isnt very picky nor is the m&p15-22, my GSG can be a bit picky but shoots all CCI's. I avoid remington stuff. Most of Aguila's line is pretty good too just scored a couple thousand rounds of their .22lr subsonic stuff which has run well so far. Federal and Blazer have been alright too but ymmv always best to grab a few box's of whatever you can find and test them all out. Except Remington cause even if your gun runs it its dirty and inaccurate.

I normally just shoot from my stash of federal bulk pack for target duty, but get a lot of failures. For light varmint work, I'm partial to the Remington CeeBee. For something different, there's the Aguila Super Maximum.
Shooting through a short barrel Cobra Derringer into wet phone books: 7" penetration, with expansion to 9mm diameter!

(*) Buy a couple of boxes of 124 gr. WWB NATO to break in the stiff RSA. Cheap, and shoots great in the Canik! (*)

I inherited a 65 Colt Targetsman, beautiful pistol, sat in my step dads drawer for many years, took a while to get it to loosen up, but is a nail driver!
I also have a 22c which is a fun plinker, which I bought it for!
My 10/22 probably gets the most rounds thru it, the 25 round mags are addicting!
Never met a 22 round that didn't make me smile!

When I bought my Ruger SR22 I knew that some of the new polymer wonders had some potential issues with jams, etc.... So I went down to Academy and purchased 5 different boxes of 22... I found that while most of them worked well, CCI had the best performance for me....

Thanks so much! Keep it coming! Good advice to buy a variety to test first (and good excuse to shoot). 5000 round buy right off was exaggeration on my part. My 10/22 from the mid 1980's seems to fire any old thing. I think I still have some old 22 Remington lead from the 80's lol. You know, some online cigar dealers create their own sampler packs, it would be cool if online ammo places would do the same with popular calibers.......

I have a Ruger MK IV 22/45 Target that I have had for about 6 months now and it has run 100% so far with a variety of 22 ammo. I am just finishing up a 1400 round bucket of Remington Golden Bullets and it ran them without any problems. I have also shot CCI Mini Mags, Aguila, and Federal bulk that Walmart sells all ran 100%.

Every gun is different and you should try several different brands to see if yours likes a certain brand better than others.

There is a lot of mods you can do to your MK IV if you like to spend money on it. Good luck with yours.

Image. Went to the range over the weekend and the Ruger did well. 40 year old Remington, Blazzer, CCI ammo - no problem. One fail to eject on Aquila. Winchester 14xx FPS ran fine and was obviously hotter than the other stuff. So far so good!

It has to be my S&W model 41 I have a 7" barrel with iron sights and a 5" bull barrel with red dot it's never failed me in the 20+ years I've owned it. The grip angle and weight of the pistol reminds me of a 1911 plus it's the most accurate 22 pistol I've ever shot. It will only shoot quality ammo so I buy CCI SV buy the case when I find it on sale. The Model 41 is one pistol that will be passed on to my children and grandchildren.

CCI produced a polymer coated round last year that has become my favorite. Why? It's super clean. The action , breech, muzzle, bore, and compensator are amazingly cleaner after a long day of shooting then would be with normal exposed lead ammo.

I'm so impressed I'm on my second box of 3k rounds. Target Sports often has it on sale for $170 and last fall CCI had a $30 rebate as well. Look for the red white and blue Patriot Packs.

CCI Green Tag.

In my heavy barrel 10/22, if they all don't go into the same ragged hole, it is my fault.

The Walmart federal 525 rd value pack is as good as anything for just general purpose plinking and practice. My personal favorite is the CCI Blazer RNL. Accurate enough for target work but cheap enough to plink with. Check the .22 ammo prices at Palmetto State Armory. They run some incredibly good weekly specials on a variety of items. And if you’re willing to buy in bulk the shipping’s free.

Hi Flingit1200s,

Congrats on your new Ruger. I shoot a S&W Victory with 4K rounds of Blazer RNL, I have had no failures. The Blazer is accurate, a great range ammo and good prices. Mini Mags are very good but a step up in price.

I"ve owned the Ruger Mark 2, Ruger SR22 and now the Ruger Mark 4...... I also have the 10/22... All have performed well above expectations for a rimfire platform.... I've got close to 30 firearm in my gun cage... Anytime someone comes over they immediately gravitate to the Ruger Mark 4.. It's such an eye catcher.

tx22 is on my buy short list, held off for awhile to see how the early adopter ones held up especially the plastic mags but still all positive reviews on them.

This is my favorite in a pistol. Just fantastic. I like it so much I ordered a Cooks Holster for it.
