1. Decide what sights you want. Changing sights on a 1911 could require milling of the slide.

2. Decide what beaver tail grip safety you want. Different styles require different frame modifications.

Those are the two most important points I can make to the new 1911 buyer.

Long time 1911 shooter here, get what you want 1st time if possible always get something others like incase you sell it to upgrade, remember most of any $$ spent to "customize" something is lost forever get what you want, today in Dallas I saw a mint STI Spartan $580 out the door with 3 mags and box all stock ready to go nothing changed. All anyone would need.

When we had our store I saw so many 1911's come in for sale or trade in that were "customized" as to a joke they just had to change it and most got surprised to what the value went to DOWN and we would really not want most of them as hard to resale, some had much more than the cost of the pistol in them and like to have passed out on my offers for them, so get what you want to start with, the STI I mentioned earlier would I bet shoot better than most can and had it all and would hold resale well, make someone a perfect entry 1911 and last a lifetime. Yet sure would not be any surprise to see the new owner start changing it up, mine is way over 15 years old and still box stock just very well worn same as the rest. Shoots as good as any and 1 slide stop broken in all that time they sent another in 3 days in hand here.

If you want to carry it, practice, practice, practice, sweeping the safety off. Muscle memory helps a lot when the SHTF and you need to use it.

OTOH, if you have been used to sweeping the safety off on a 1911, it doesn't bother anything if you end up sweeping off the phantom thumb safety on a Canik.

I still do the phantom sweep on just about every pistol I shoot. That is likely too burned into my brain to ever get rid of it.

Started shooting 1911's a very long time ago and never stopped and never had a safety release issue, only had 1 bad 1911 but not for long. Its just an automatic thing as said in brain.

Cons are no adjustable trigger on my model but then I plan on adding a new trigger in the future. Otherwise it has the larger beaver tail already and he nodded the grip safety it looks like so other then a polish job I have done nothing and it shoots like a dream.


Ever hear of a """as said target trigger stop screw in a tad to far or moving in?""" you have a nice paper weight, all the years I carried 1911's none of those had the over travel screw, dept did not even allow them in the triggers. For me range guns only there.

After several sessions with her I think the trigger is pretty damn good as it sits. I was thinking of changing earlier but man it’s hard to think that it can be that much better( I know that’s self told BS, of course I can make it better) I am just gonna keep mind melding with it until I figure out what if anything I will try to upgrade.

Did they still have that S&W 4506 too? I looked at that STI on Monday. The Spartan is basically a Rock Island with a different slide. I eventually went with a Springfield XDM 45 Competition.

$575 delivered. I really wanted a double stack .45. I've got lots of single stack .45 pistols. However that 4506 almost came home.

Only 'quirk' amongst most 1911s are the mags. The double stacks are too wide / fat for my hand. Great thing about 1911's (like AR15s) is they are like the GM 350 small block. You can make / build them into anything to do anything.
