Good AR optic?

I'm looking for an optic for my SHTF AR. It's just your basic 16" Colt, although that role is sorta also filled with a SIG MCX.
The default for a long time was an ACOG, but lately I hear a lot that it's obsolete, eye relief is not so great, etc. So what would you former and current high speed low drag types use if you had a choice? I'm not sure I want to spend for an Elcan.
Is there a commercially available prism sight that out-ACOGs the ACOG? Or something else? Hoping to stay in the 3 digit price range, but if a superior sight by a good margin is out there, I can think about spending up for it.

I'm not into spending big money. I've got a Burris 332 tactical scope and really love it. I believe its was $300 something on sale. I have a Sparc red dot that is very nice, bright I like too, $100 something on sale. I've also used hunting scopes like a 4x12 and like those for long shooting.

When I bought my Leupold DPP, I took a look at the D-EVO optic. The D-EVO isn't cheap, but combined with a small footprint red dot, it would be a KICK-A$$ setup for short and mid range shooting.

Vortex venom PST 1-4x with TMCQ MOA reticle. $329 if you can find them. Best scope+reticle/dollar out there IMHO.

And I don't think that ACOGs are exactly passe yet. If you want to spend that much, I don't think that there is anything better.

For the money dont think they're any prism's better then the acog, I've also got PA, Vortex's, Monstrum, acog's better in all ways and certainly more trustworthy in situations where your life could be depending on it.

I have 3 AR's currently. My 5.56 sports an Athlon "Talos" 4-14x, and my 300 Blackout has the Athlon 1-4x. Both have mil-spec reticles. I also have a 10.5" 300AAC pistol with adjustable arm brace that carries a Vortex Crossfire with a set of AR sights mounted 45 degrees offset as backup.

If going for a Dot, then Aimpoint is about as good as you get for durability and battery life.

ACOG is really hard to beat for a durable, low magnification prism site.

What's your goal with this AR? Range toy, hunting, competition?

If you're just looking for an all-around solution then I'd check out an eotech with their 3x magnifier and shift to side mount.
