Social Distancing Projects :)

Post by Weapon » Thu Apr 02, 2020 8:55 am

I had a few minutes of spare time due to some COVID-19 cancellations and decided to crank out a couple DIY projects. The original idea was to make a new inner and outer belt for CO but I had enough material left over to also make a new carry belt.

As usual, I got a little carried away and added some extra overkill...and, after making these, additional ideas started popping into my head so I had to order some more supplies for a Rev 2.0...

The CO belt is fairly standard design with the addition of a ratchet strap to easily tighten and loosen as needed between stages.

Carry belt is also a fairly straight forward dual layer, double stitched design with a heavy duty roller buckle.

It was an entertaining way to burn up some time. :) now, I am trying to decide if I want to move my current CO holster and mag pouches onto the new belt or just make a new holster and mag pouches...I guess that will depend on how long this social distancing thing remains in effect.

I really like the look of those... My Kore belt is starting to fray and I can tell the inner hard lining is starting to break down... Any plans in the future to sell them....

My thing is making Paracord belts. After having too many Wal Mart belts break, stretch, or otherwise wear out, I learned how to do the Paracord braiding. While I was unemployed through much of 2017, I spent a bit of my time working on belts. A $7 buckle from eBay and a 100' hank of Paracord will make a belt with very little scrap left over.
You end up with a belt that WON'T break, doesn't stretch, and is sturdy enough to carry a holster on without sagging. With 8 strands of 550 cord, you've got a belt with a 4400 lb. capacity. Even after a couple of years of daily wear, these belts still look new.

I have a stock of cord, and spare buckles waiting. If I end up with when unexpected surplus of free time, I'll jump in and make a few more 'just because'. It's not like I'll ever wear these out.

What kind of weave? Everything I've tried has some kind of stretch, and no torsional rigidity.

It's a simple Double-Cobra weave. The trick is to make sure that the cord is pulled as tight as possible with each step.

Unfortunately, I can't find the exact instructions I used, but there are plenty others on the web...

I've used it for bracelets and a sling.

I wasn’t planning on it but I recently spoke to one of my neighbors who happens to run an upholstery shop. He has industrial sewing machines and mentioned he is looking for ways to expand his business during this COVID-19 mess. I am not entirely sure it is going to go anywhere but maybe...

I found another supplier that has some interesting options for the outer layer. I may have to make a few additional outer belts just to have something entirely different - high def, photo realistic patterns are possible:

Looks/sounds like Strapworks.com. I've used them for parts for a couple of slings and some backpack straps. They've got a nice selection.

Double cobra makes a good carry handle for a medium sized ALICE pack as well. I made a jig to make those some time ago - it’s a fairly simple design with a sliding section so you can adjust it to whatever length you need and then lock it down.

I will have to order some of this printed webbing to see how well it works with the webbing I am already using. Two layers of the current webbing is incredibly stiff but I went further with the comp belt and added a middle stiffener layer to it. There isn’t much info available on the printed webbing so it may be the thin/flexible type. If so, it might still work as an outer layer just for show or with one layer of my current webbing and a stiffener layer. Then there is the question of what kind of buckles and hardware will work with it. All kinds of fun stuff to figure out.

Well, with the tiger print I'm pretty sure the hardware needs to be covered in rhinestones for sure. You might have to get your Bedazzler out.

Or, really class it up with some of these...

Those bottom ones remind me of the Cartier Jaguar cufflinks. They are a steal at a mere $15k each. lol

I was briefly distracted by other projects but now back on webbing related goodies. I ordered a few sample sets to check the quality of a few more materials as well as some new and improved thread for seams. It is amazing how much really good thread costs nowadays ($40 per spool with shipping) :-x

It looks like shipping delays apply to basically everything on the planet for the time being but more stuff will be coming to this thread fairly soon. :)

I have to make at least two extra belts.

My club was already doing rimfire steel matches and they just announced we will be doing MSR matches when the COVID nonsense is over. I am tempted to call them assault weapon matches on social media just to annoy the liberals...

Anyhoo, new belts in the works.
