Dajogejr wrote: Thu Feb 16, 2023 5:21 am I gotta tell ya, my Rival S Darkside is becoming my go to in my target/range pistol rotation.
I’ve got roughly 500 rounds or so down range. After a proper field strip and lube, my first 50 rounds left me a little miffed. 3-5 FTE/stove pipes. Magazine didn’t matter.
Second 50 1-2 FTE.
Afterwards, not a single FTE or any kind of issues whatsoever for the last 400 or so rounds.

The weight of this pistol is perfect for what I want. Very little muzzle rise, stays on target, soft but not lazy recoil.
Weird thing is, my Legion X5 is a tad more than half an ounce heavier than the Rival S, but the S just feels heavier.

I’ve always looked at Caniks and never picked one up.. the S really intrigued me…and being a trigger snob, test firing at the LGS sold me.
Frankly, I’ve done trigger work to my X5, Prodigy and Competitor. I honestly…have zero plans to modify this Rival S in any way. Flat trigger feels great, nice clean break, reasonable short take up and great reset.
It is, by far, the best out of box factory trigger on a striker gun I’ve ever fired.
Welcome and congratulations!

I'm still waiting on my Rival-S, but I've had my Rival for a while.

I felt the same way you do. The Rival was the best striker trigger I've ever tried. But, it was very easy and inexpensive to make it even better.

A Freedomsmith trigger reduced the take-up even more - to a near-1911 amount.

Some springs and a #2 split ring and the pull/break weight dropped by over a pound. My Rival WAS the best striker trigger. NOW, it is one of the best triggers I have, on any gun - and I have mostly custom 1911s.

I am really looking forward to receiving my Rival-S and doing all the same mods to it that I've done to my Rival, then replacing my Rival with the Rival-S for shooting USPSA Carry Optics. The Rival will ride around in my bag as a (stellar) backup.

I have a Sig Armorer’s comp trigger kit in my Legion X5. I don’t know if you can make a striker fired trigger better than that.
However…once I get more rounds down range, I may venture into working on the trigger. I honestly don’t feel the need.

While I haven’t had time to look over the mechanics of the ignition system on the Canik to fully understand it, I can see…the parts are chromed.
Aside from design and shapes, the coating on contact points makes a big difference. The fact that Canik is starting off chrome on chrome, I like it…

Is that Sig competition trigger as good as the Rival? I have no experience with it other than playing with the tricked out P320 Grey Guns had at their table at Nationals. They said that was the top trigger job and it felt laughable to me compared to the old SFX. I just quietly put it down and forever crossed the P320 off my list. Maybe that was a crappy trigger job though? This is not a slam, I’m realy interested in your comparison as I do really like everything else about that gun.

I "had" a X5 Legion with the GG trigger and my buddy had the Sig Armorer trigger. He was blown away by my FS TP9 SFX trigger with stock springs. Both guns were sold.

WxGuy wrote: Fri Feb 17, 2023 12:30 pm Has anyone with both the poly and steel Rivals tried to switch barrels yet? Are they the same??
Have not tried it but I did note the Rival-S barrel is marked with an “S” stamp so it is definitely not just pulled out of the same parts bin.

The Sig Armorer trigger in a P320 series is better than the factory Canik, there is no comparison. I’d put the SA comp series trigger very, very close to a very good 1911 trigger.
GG triggers in comparison are not even on the same level. Not even in the same ballpark.

The factory Canik is very good, but box stock compared to a SA comp trigger, sorry…not very close.
I’m not knocking the Canik, out of the box, it is the best striker fired trigger out there IMO.

That SA kit is just that good….

I appreciate the videos!

A "stock to stock" trigger vid would be a real eye opener.
I received new ammo yesterday and I'll run it later through the chrono and perform a drill or two. Initial 10 round rapid fire felt real good. 124g Southern Munitions HiTek. The black coated bullet looks cool along side the Steel Dark Side.

Ok good to know. Thank you.

C’mon…you don’t want to torture me by putting the X5 trigger back to stock.. LOL :)
Absolutely no doubt, even as good as a stock X5 trigger is, the Canik out of the box it better.
I’ll even go as far to say an X5 with the Apex trigger bar and over travel stop, which I have in my toolbox bin (it was the first, cheaper mod I made) is still not as good as a stock Canik trigger. Close, but not as good.

Sig Armorer went off producing a comp trigger kit, lots of springs and adjustability for the P320 series.
He spent a lot of time and effort hard croming internal parts, polishing and reshaping parts for the smooth, clean break you get.
His kits typically come with a curved trigger. It’s an even tighter setup. I chose to keep the flat skeletonized X5 trigger with his mod as I like the flat.
You do get a hair more travel with his X5 flat trigger… All my pistols have a flat trigger, I like to keep it consistent.
The SA modified X5 flat trigger has a little more travel but also decreases the weight by half to 3/4 of a pound.

One day, I may go freedomsmith trigger and springs for my Rival S. I honestly just don’t feel the need quite yet.

I know it sounds like I’m championing the X5 and SA kit, it truly is a very nice shooter.
But I’m really, really a fan of my Rival S. I thought the vids would help showcase the difference.. and now we’re talking a few hundred bucks into a pistol that is already more expensive than the Rival S. I think for half what I have in the SA trigger kit I could get my Canik very, very close to what it is.

I think over time you will find how easy it is to make slight spring changes and make the Rival S sing. Back when I had a poly Rival, I did install a FS Zombie Pro and couldn't really tell the difference from stock even though there was one. I believe the takeup and reset was just a little bit better. And I mean by a little bit. The largest difference with the same FS trigger was in my TP9 SFX. Very little takeup (4mm) and a measured 2mm reset. That's sick! I really don't want to go down that rabbit hole again but it is why I sold the poly Rival. My steel DS has a 4mm reset.

On my Dark Side Steel frame, the takeup is 5.5mm and the reset is 4mm. I have reached out to FS for guidance on which trigger will produce the same result as my TP9 SFX.

So, this was odd but thought I’d post it here.
I picked up two factory Canik 20 round mags when i purchased it.
I picked up Mec Gar optimum plus 2 mag extensions for the two factory mags that came with the pistol.
They didn’t work. The Mag would not seat in the pistol..and it wasn’t because it was stuffed to brim.
Empty, they do not lock in. By naked eye they look the same. These same mags when they had the factory base plates, both plastic and the aluminum plates worked fine. So I need to measure them up, see if MagWarehouse will exchange them, if not, I’d bet I’m going to be filing a little.
Glad I brought all the mags with me. I put about 200 rounds through it today. Including some steel silhouette targets and 95 yards.
I’m not gonna sit here and tell you I was ringing the target often at 95 yards, but, I will say, 3 or 4 out of 10 times it rang :)

At 50 yards, I could ring the steel silhouette 9 to 10 times out of 10.

I had zero issues. A few shooters we were with has some FTEs…simply put, they just were a little weak wristed shooting.
I did a couple of mag dumps, lots of double taps, some slow and deliberate shooting…. This is my new favorite shooter.

I’m still going to hold off on any trigger work… for now…. So I say.. LOL. I wish I would’ve gotten into the Canik game a while ago.

Once I find out what the deal is with the mags I’ll post back. It’ll either be file them down… or just put the aluminum base pads back on.
#48330
Interesting the +2s did not work! I think you're right about doing a little filing to let them seat correctly.

Awesome shooting on the steel targets!!!

I bit the bullet and have a Freedomsmith Zombie Pro coming for the Steel gun. I like the side angle entry to the trigger safety and have the same trigger shoe in my TP9 SFX.
The only mod to my gun currently is the W74 guide rod and a 16lbs spring. I had the 15 in but like the 16 better when running splits. Next will be the trigger shoe.

Thanks….it was fun to get outdoors after being frozen inside for so long :)
Full transparency, I was able to clang the steel @ 95 with my Prodigy and X5 Legion as consistent.

Yeah, I’ve read up elsewhere, it looks like a little filing of the plastic is needed…. So, busting out the file and cleaning/oiling up some guns tonight!!
What is really weird is the brand new, factory mags with the plus 2 I bought from my LGS at the same time I purchased the pistol…they worked flawlessly.
I want to see how the Canik is wearing now that I’m approaching 600 to 700ish on the round count.
#48332
Fixed it.
A little bit at a time on a small belt sander/knife sharpener I have.
Click in, lock back, drop free… perfect.
Mostly it was the front curve, but cleaning up the sides helped as well.
They have as much push/movement as the factory mag with extension on it now.

In this picture, the factory mag is the center, the outers are factory mags with the MecGar plus two extensions. All is right now!
