Helped run an Action Pistol match at my club today, which is designed to introduce new shooter to the sport. Most have only shot statically from a fixed firing line. Was asked to RO a squad, and spent most of my time pretty much stressing safety, stage planning based on IDPA vs USPSA rules, how and why I was planning to run the stage, and answering questions on equipment. I certainly have a new found respect for all the ROs and SOs that make a match happen. This was probably a little more stressful due to the "newness" factor, and trying to not get my A$$ shot!!!
I had one other experienced guy and one semi experienced with me running the tablet and timer when I had to run. Definitely a big help! I always ran last and the guys got a kick watching me run it. Stage 3 was one that showed I am no different than anyone else...I forgot to shoot a target through a portal. Unfortunately it cost me the match!
There were two other CO EX "young" shooters and another ESP EX on the other squad. I did manage to win two of the stages, kicking some "youngin" butt!!
All in all I actually enjoyed it. It was nice to pass on things that took me a while to learn. Everyone had fun and said they were definitely signing up for the next match.
Here's the stages.
Stage 1...
First time shooting through barrels and the echo definitely screwed up hearing the steel.
Stage 2...
Quick clean run and win.
Stage 3...
Left out the target through the portal.
Stage 4...
Another clean run and crushed the rack for the Win. Got a lot of laughs, some of the guys struggled from 10 yards.
